They tend to stretch from the forehead to the back of the neck and are often caused by stress, but there are other reasons as well. In this post, we recommend simple yet effective home remedies to manage tension headaches before they become chronic.

If tension headaches occur 7 to 10 days a month, they are considered episodic. However, if they are used continuously for two weeks each month, the risk of the headache becoming  chronic is very high. 

It is quite normal for tiredness to show itself through headaches after a strenuous day. Most of the time, the pain is like a ribbon that goes around the forehead, temples and neck, or like a heavy load on the head.

These pains can easily be distinguished from migraines, as the latter only occurs on one side.

But what are the  most common causes of tension headaches? Then we will list some of them:

  • Muscle tension:  If you stay tense in the same position for a long time (one-sided postures over several hours), you can suffer from tension headaches as a fogle. Typical examples are long hours of work in front of a computer or a machine in a factory where the same movements are constantly being performed.
  • Overworked eyes:  Anyone who sits in front of the screen for hours with a fixed gaze or studies for a long time without interruption can also suffer from tension headaches due to the overloading of the eyes.
  • Stress:  The hectic pace of everyday life, worries and fears also have side effects. It is therefore important to learn to cope with stress – this can improve the quality of life and also prevent tension headaches.
  • Bad Eating Habits Do You Just Have a Cup of Coffee for Breakfast? Or do you skip dinner to lose weight? These habits are unhealthy because the body is not supplied with the necessary nutrients. The consequences can, for example, be weakness and headaches.
  • Elevated blood pressure: High blood  pressure can also be a direct cause of tension headaches, as well as dizziness and malaise. This is because the heart is more stressed.

    Home remedies for tension headaches

    1. Heat-cold applications

    Heat and cold applications are great headache remedies. So, if you come home with a dull, aching pain, your best bet is to prepare a cold compress with relaxing apple cider vinegar.

    Simply moisten a cloth with it and put it in the refrigerator for a moment. Then place it on your forehead for about 15 minutes and then take a hot shower. The shower should only last a few minutes for the hot water to work on the neck.

    Then we recommend that you relax for 15-20 minutes and then apply another cold compress. Now it’s best to use a cold lavender or rosemary tea for this This application is very simple and very effective.

    2. Ginger tea

    We have already talked about the health-promoting properties of ginger in various posts. One of the best-known benefits is the natural pain-relieving effect without any side effects. Ginger is an excellent remedy!

    It is also anti-inflammatory and is highly recommended for tension headaches. To benefit, you can simply grate a piece of ginger (a tablespoon) and then pour a cup of hot water over it. Let it steep briefly and then drink it slowly.

    3. Peppermint mask for the eyes

    This is made as follows:

    • Make a mint tea from 10 leaves  and half a glass of water. Then chill it in the refrigerator.
    • Moisten a cloth with the tea.
    • Lie down relaxed and put the moistened cloth over your  eyes. You should relax this way for at least 20 minutes.
    • You will feel fresher with it, your eyes will relax and your body will relax thanks to the calming effect of the mint.
    • As soon as the envelope warms up, you can moisten it again with the cold tea.
    • You can also use mint oil for this.

    4. Olive oil and lemon juice

    This is a very well-known home remedy: olive oil has anti-inflammatory effects  provides the body with moisture and improves blood circulation.

    In combination with lemon juice, you get a very effective natural remedy that is also very helpful for tension headaches. Simply take a spoonful of olive oil with 3 drops of lemon juice and then relax with the peppermint mask described above, for example.
