Our liver
The liver is the largest and most important organ in our metabolism. In its normal state, it weighs up to 1.5 kg in an adult.
It has the important task of breaking down and building up all of the nutrients that are essential for the human body – i.e. proteins, carbohydrates and fats – and converting them into one another. This makes the nutrients available to the body.
For example, the blood sugar level is kept constant, even if the intake with food falls and the body’s needs increase.
The liver then takes care of the balance with its glycogen store: As a storage organ, it can also store excess nutrients and make them available again if there is a lack of nutrients.
As a large cleaning filter, it filters all toxins and pollutants from our blood and breaks them down. It is actually very easy to treat the liver well: little fat, no alcohol, no harmful substances.
Pollutants can be environmental toxins or residues of pesticides, herbicides or fungicides in your food. Therefore , always buy food from a reliable source, the more natural and unprocessed, the better!
Take a break from alcohol for a few days, this is more than good for your other organs too!
Liver smoothies
We have selected the 4 recipes you can use to make liver smoothies. This means that its ingredients could stimulate the activity of your liver.
We deliberately made sure that the preparation is easy because only a few ingredients are required.
These are ingredients that you either have in the fridge or the kitchen anyway, or those that can be bought in the local store.
Green smoothie with artichoke
As a traditional medicinal plant, the artichoke can support the liver in its metabolic tasks. The bitter substance contained in artichokes stimulates the metabolism of the liver and bile. You need:
- 2 artichoke hearts (from the glass)
- 1 lemon (the juice of it)
- 2 thick slices of pineapple (unsweetened)
- Water to taste
The artichoke hearts have quite hard fibers, which is why the knife of your blender should be particularly sharp and the blender should have a high wattage.
If this is not the case, please cut the pineapple slices and artichoke hearts into as small pieces as possible before you puree everything together to make a refreshing smoothie!
Dandelion smoothie
The dandelion also contains bitter substances that support the liver’s metabolism. Make sure you only pick the young leaves far away from roads.
- 1 handful of dandelions
- pear
- banana
- Water to taste
If you don’t peel the pear and just remove the core, you quickly have an additional source of fiber!
First cut the dandelion leaves into approx. 2 cm long pieces / strips, only roughly chop the pear and banana. Then put everything together in a blender and puree it into a smoothie.
Depending on your personal preferences, you can then sweeten it with honey and add some water.
Radicchio smoothie
Radicchio is a bitter leaf salad with wine-red leaves. Its bitter substances are said to stimulate the liver’s activity.
- 1 handful of radiccio leaves
- pear
- Handful of grapes (color does not matter)
- Some lemon juice
First wash the radicchio well and pluck or cut into small pieces. Then cut the pear into pieces without peeling, removing the core.
Then cut open the individual grapes and carefully remove the seeds with a knife. If your stand mixer / blender is strong enough, you can leave the seeds in the grapes.
If your stand mixer is a bit older, it may not be able to shred the somewhat firm outer skin of the grapes.
In this case, you’ll need to quarter or eighth of the grapes before blending them. Then puree everything together to make an autumn smoothie.
Bittersweet smoothie
The chicory also contains bitter substances that have a stimulating effect on the liver. Chicory is actually known as a vegetable or salad, but it can also be used to make a smoothie. You need:
- 1 chicory
- ½ lemon (the juice from it)
- banana
- little apple
First cut all the ingredients into small pieces and then puree everything together to make a bittersweet smoothie. The banana makes it filling and is also a good start to the day.
