Prevention And Healing Of Aphthous Ulcers In The Mouth

Often aphthous ulcers occur in the mouth when there is a lack of vitamins, stress or hormone fluctuations during menstruation. They usually go away on their own.

Prevention and healing of mouth ulcers

Aphthous ulcers are small ulcers or open sores in the mouth that can be very painful. These can be white or yellowish and often have a reddish-shiny edge.

Often mouth ulcers appear with viral infections, but the causes are often unknown.

These canker sores can be related to a weak immune system (defense) in the body and often occur after injuries from dental work or when you bite your tongue.

Why do aphthae develop in the mouth?

  • Emotional stress
  • Diet low in vitamins and minerals (lack of iron, folic acid or vitamin B12)
  • Hormonal changes
  • Menstrual period

Aphthae can affect anyone, but women are more likely to suffer from them. In some cases, they can also be inherited.

The following symptoms arise:

  • Red, painful spots that later turn into canker sores
  • Later the ulcer becomes yellowish
  • Malaise, sometimes fever

The pain can last for seven to ten days, and in some cases three weeks, depending on the size of the aphtha.

How can you prevent aphthous ulcers?

Aphthous ulcers

You can prevent mouth ulcers by consuming more vitamins and iron, which are found in both animal and plant-based foods.

  • Vitamin B2: A deficiency can then lead to cracks in the corners of the mouth. This vitamin can be found in bread, whole grains, leafy green vegetables, and milk.
  • Vitamin B3:   Can then help prevent diseases in the oral cavity. For example, contained in red and white meat, dairy products and eggs.
  • Folic acid:  A deficiency can not only lead to mouth ulcers, but also to anemia. But too much folic acid can be harmful, so you should consult a doctor before taking it.
  • Vitamin B12:  is almost only found in animal products such as seafood, meat and dairy products.
  • Vitamin C:  The lack of this vitamin does not lead to mouth ulcers, but then to bleeding gums. Foods rich in vitamin C include all citrus fruits, fruits in general, and vegetables.
  • There are also two types of functional foods that we recommend: one containing probiotics and the other omega-3 fatty acids. These have anti-inflammatory effects and, as studies from the University of Kentucky have shown, are also antibacterial. Foods that naturally contain these active ingredients are best. Foods with natural  probiotics include fresh yogurt and fermented milk. Fish, sunflower oil and dried fruits are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

    Do not forget …

A balanced diet is essential for good general health and a strong immune system.

Even if the American Dental Association assumes that aphthae will go away on their own, it makes perfect sense to promote healing and alleviate symptoms.

    • A mild mouthwash can be very helpful.
    • A good homemade mouthwash is salt water or water with baking soda.
    • You can also mix water with hydrogen peroxide to make a mouthwash.

Apply all of the tips here as often as possible and you will get better faster.
