The guava is one of the most valued and used types of fruit in naturopathy, as it has very useful properties and excellent nutritional values.

The guava , called “Goiaba” in Brazil, is a plant that is very common in the tropics. Their fruits can be eaten directly or used to make juices, ice cream, canned food, etc. The guava has a large number of seeds.

Properties of the guava

This plant has remarkable antiseptic, astringent and anti-helminthic (deworming) properties,  it can eliminate not only bacteria, but also fungi and worms that attack our organism.

For this reason, it is widely used, especially in the Philippines.

The leaves of the guava are used for wound healing and toothache, as they have a strong pain-relieving effect. For this some leaves are boiled in half a liter of water.

The brew should draw a little and then it is poured off through a filter. With this brew you can do mouthwashes for toothache, you will feel pain relief.

The leaves and bark of the guava prepared as tea also work against diarrhea. The above brew can be used to treat a sore throat, dizziness, menstrual cramps, vomiting or other stomach ailments.

The health benefits of guava are numerous, as it is high in quercetin. This active ingredient has a strong antioxidant effect and prevents the formation of sorbitol, which can cause clouding of the lens of the eye, i.e. cataracts.

This fruit is high in folic acid, which belongs to the group of B vitamins and helps fight bad breath caused by gingivitis. It is also particularly suitable for pregnant women, as guava can prevent deformities of the fetus.

This fruit is simply delicious, so we’d like to recommend a recipe that uses very ripe guava fruit and is considered a delicacy in several countries in South America.

Bocadillo (guava paste)

This paste (bocadillo) is a dessert that gives our body a large amount of natural energy. Here is our recipe:

ingredients

  • 4 pounds of guava
  • Sugar: depending on the pulp (you will need twice the amount of sugar)
  • orange juice
  • 1 cup of water

preparation

  • Cut the guava into small pieces and then boil them in water (one cup). Now press the fruit and then sieve it. Weigh the pulp. Then prepare twice the amount of sugar. For example, if you have 2 cups of pulp, you will need 4 cups of sugar. Then mix the sugar with the pulp in a saucepan.
  • Once the sugar has dissolved well over medium heat, add the orange juice, then simmer the mixture until it solidifies. If you put a small portion on a plate to sample and a ball forms, then the paste is ready.
  • Sprinkle a heatproof tin with sugar, add the guava mass, and then sprinkle it again with sugar. Let the paste cool and cut small bite-sized portions to eat.
