Avocados  are a very versatile type of fruit that can be used in many delicious recipes. Like other foods, the avocado oxidizes very quickly and loses its bright, fresh color, which makes it appear dark and unappetizing.

It is therefore advisable to always eat avocados fresh and quickly within a short time after preparation.

But we don’t always use the whole fruit and want to keep the other half for the salad the next day without it getting dark. Today we’re going to give you some tips on how to avoid avocados from oxidizing.

Do not remove the core of the avocados

If you only want to use one half of the avocado, do not remove the avocado seed from the other half to avoid oxidation.

Unfortunately, this trick only protects the area under the core, so it is only partially effective. But there are other alternatives to protect the whole fruit.

The onion method

This trick consists of cutting 1/4 red onion into large pieces and placing them in a sealable container. The unpeeled avocado half is placed on top. The container is now closed and stored in the refrigerator.

The onion vapors preserve the green color and freshness of the avocado. Since only the avocado peel is in contact with the onion, the taste does not change. The onion used can easily be used for cooking.

Olive oil is a natural product that does not change the taste or smell of the avocado. Moisten the avocado half with a little oil and store it in an airtight container.

This will avoid oxidation of the fruit as the pulp will not come into contact with the oxygen.

Lemon juice method

Avocado and lemon juice complement each other perfectly when preparing dishes. Did you also know that lemon juice is used to preserve the avocado?

Citric acid slows down the oxidation process,  so you can simply drizzle the fruit with a little lemon juice.

As an alternative, you can also place a lemon wedge on top of the avocado half. In both cases, the avocado should not be kept in a hermetic container in the refrigerator for longer than 2-4 days.

One method often used in restaurants and households is to soak the avocado in cold water to avoid contact with the oxygen. However, it is advisable to only use this method if the remaining avocado is consumed immediately afterwards.

Kitchen foil

Kitchen foil can be very useful for preserving food. Cover the avocado well with the foil and store it in the refrigerator.

If the avocado becomes a little darker and loses its bright color, it is completely sufficient to remove a fine layer of the surface and discard it.

Puree the avocado

If you want to keep an avocado residue, you can use it to prepare a delicious guacamole. Puree the avocado and add some lime juice.

The lime acid avoids oxidation of the avocado, it stays nice green and fresh. Place the guacamole in an airtight container and use additional foil between the container and the lid.

So you can season the guacamole as needed the next day or use it for a salad, for example.
