Expectorants for healthy lungs

With colds, there is often also mucus build-up in the lungs and consequently coughing, breathing problems and pain. In this post, you will learn which  expectorants can help with these problems.

Expectorants for healthy lungs

First you have to soften the mucus so that you can drain it out better afterwards. The inhalation of hot steam with various medicinal plants is ideal for this. The first expectorant:

How does this work?

  • Bring two liters of water to the boil and then add various herbs. Pine, thyme, rosemary, eucalyptus, chamomile and oregano are particularly recommended. Special mixtures are available in some health food stores.
  • After 5 – 10 minutes the water is removed from the stove. The steam with the active ingredients of the herbs is then inhaled, covering the head with a towel. Caution: The steam is very hot, so be careful not to get burned.
  • Inhale deeply, alternately closing one nostril or the other and also your mouth.
  • Repeat several times a day.

Liquify the mucus

It is important to liquefy the mucus so that it can be excreted better. This expectorant might help:

  • Vegetable broths made from onions, leeks, cabbage, garlic, carrots and celery
  • Drink thyme and eucalyptus tea outside of meals.
  • Avoid mucus-promoting foods such as flour and dairy products. Plant milk, for example, is healthier.
  • Drink at least two liters of water a day outside of meals.

Loosen mucus

To loosen the mucus  , short, light pushes on the back can be very helpful. This has to be done by someone else.

Concentrate your hand and hit the upper back briefly several times to loosen the mucus in the bronchi. This is particularly helpful with children. With weak, elderly people, you have to be very careful.

Care for the intestines

The intestines are closely related to the lungs and must therefore also be cared for. Mucus in the lungs can also build up from poor digestion of food.

Therefore, mucus buildup is common in young children who still have poor digestion (for example, foods made with refined flour).

Onion on the bedside table

This expectorant is particularly effective in the early stages of colds and mucus. E ine half an onion on the bedside table.

During sleep, the volatile components of the onion are inhaled – these clean and free the airways. The onion is changed every night. However, if the mucus is already very solid, this remedy will no longer help.

Suction cups

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses suction cups that  create a vacuum on the body, which stimulates the skin and muscles – the pores open and it stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation.

This can create  a swelling that will provide relief to the organs, in this case the lungs. The suction cups are placed on both sides of the back at lung level between the shoulder blade and the spine.

After 10 minutes of action, you can remove the suction cups again. It is quite normal to leave red, circular marks that gradually disappear. Suction cups can be used both at home and by a therapist.
